Trezor offers advanced security features built to offer the user maximum security. With offline wallets, users are more secured by phishing, viruses, malware, and more. However, if the Trezor device is lost or stolen, the device can not be accessed without a PIN code. And Trezor offers a 4 digit pin code to ensure the device can be accessed only from the owner with its PIN code. The PIN code can be remembered easily from the owner as it’s a 4 digit. But, in cases for the worst scenario possible, the owner should write the 4 digit code on a safer place as a backup. Trezor recommends keeping the PIN code protected by water or fire damage.
Recovery Phrase Seed
Trezor offers “Recovery Phrase Seed”, known as 12 or 24-word recovery phrase. The recovery seed phrase restores your funds in a new device in case your Trezor device is stolen or lost. The recovery seed phrase can be reset only with “Wipe Key” and is recommended to save it somewhere safe. Trezor also offers the “Shamir Backup” method to keep your recovery phrase by splitting the phrase into multiple unique shares.
The passphrase is an additional security feature of the Trezor device which allows the user to create a hidden wallet. The Trezor device generates the passphrase with random characters as words or sentences. Passphrases are case-sensitive and if the user enters an “empty” passphrase, it will let the user access the original seed-only wallet. Passphrase serves as a backup option in case the recovery phrase seed is compromised, as the wallet would not be accessed with only the recovery phrase. The passphrase is not stored anywhere, and the user should store it somewhere safe. The user cannot reset the passphrase or access funds on the Trezor wallet without the passphrase.
The passphrase protection is disabled and is not shown at the setup of a new Trezor device for the first time. To use the passphrase feature, the user first visits wallet.trezor.io and connects the Trezor hardware device with the website. After the user has plugged in and connected into the wallet, the user clicks on the name of your Trezor device and go to the “Advanced” tab menu. Then, the user can enable the passphrase with instructions shown on the screen at the Advanced tab menu. The Trezor T model will ask the user to enter the passphrase by typing it on a web browser or use the touchscreen on the Trezor device.
Trezor Password Manager
Trezor Password Manager tool stores your cryptocurrency password on the Chrome browser with an extension. The password is saved on Dropbox or Google Drive storage. Passwords on the Password Manager cannot be decrypted without the user’s Trezor device and the recovery phrase. In cases where the Trezor device is stolen or lost, the user can recover the password with the recovery phrase seed. Trezor Password Manager allows the user to import and export the password list on a CSF file. The CSF file that is imported, it’s not protected so the user needs to make sure the passwords are not compromised.
The wipe code feature allows the user to erase the PIN and recovery phrase with a self-destruct PIN code. The user can set a wipe code after authenticating the Trezor device with the PIN first. Once the user erases the PIN code and the recovery phrase seed, it cannot be reset anymore.
